After the Storm: Storm Damage Tree Work
Storm damage restoration is one of the services we offer alongside everyday tree work. Auckland's big blows bring down trees that looked perfectly sound the day before, and they leave behind the more dangerous damage that is harder to see: split trunks, torn limbs caught up in the crown, and root plates lifted just enough that the tree now leans.
Before We Get There
- Keep people well away from a fallen or leaning tree, and from anything hanging in the canopy. Broken limbs can drop without warning, and a tree lying on something is under tension that is released when it is cut.
- Stay clear of power lines. If a tree is on or against the lines, treat the lines as live, keep away and call the lines company - or 111 if anyone is in danger.
- Do not start cutting it yourself. Storm-damaged wood behaves unpredictably, and a chainsaw on a tree under load is how people get badly hurt.
- Take photos of the damage before anything is moved, if it is safe to, for your insurer.

What We Do
Make it safe
First the hazards: hung-up limbs brought down, split and torn branches cut back to sound wood, and a tree that is leaning onto a house, fence or car taken off it in controlled pieces.
Remove what cannot be saved
Trees that have come down, or have been damaged beyond repair, are cut up, chipped and loaded out, and the stumps can be ground out later. Leaning and wind-damaged palms are taken down in sections - see palm tree removal.
Look at what is left
A storm that brings down one tree has usually tested its neighbours too. While we are there we will look over the other trees on the section and tell you honestly if any of them need attention, and whether reducing or pruning them would lower the risk next time.
Clear up
Branches, trunks and debris are removed and the lawn, drive and gardens are cleaned up, as they are on every job.
After a Big Storm
When a big storm has been through Auckland, everyone needs a tree person at once. When you get in touch, tell us whether the tree is on a house, on a vehicle, across the only access or on the lines, so the most dangerous jobs can be dealt with first.
