Pruning, Trimming and Thinning - What Gets Done
"Tree trimming" covers a lot of different jobs, and the difference matters to the tree. The work we are most often asked for:
- Deadwooding - dead and dying branches taken out before they come down on their own, onto a car, a deck or a person.
- Corrective pruning - branches that cross and rub, split limbs and weak forks dealt with while the tree is young enough to grow around the cuts.
- Thinning - selected branches taken out right through the crown so light and wind get through, without changing the tree's outline.
- Clearance - limbs cut back off the roof, gutters, a fence line or a neighbour's boundary. For headroom underneath, see crown lifting; for a smaller tree overall, canopy reductions.
- Shrub and fruit tree pruning - the smaller jobs as well, from overgrown shrubs to fruit trees that have got away on you.
Cuts in the right place
A good pruning cut is made just outside the collar where a branch joins the trunk or a larger limb, so the tree can seal it over. Stubs left behind and cuts flush against the trunk are what lead to rot. It is the least visible part of the job and the one that decides how the tree copes afterwards.
When to prune
It depends on the tree. Many deciduous trees are easiest to read and prune in winter with the leaves off; stone fruit is usually pruned in dry weather after picking rather than in winter, to lower the risk of silver leaf; flowering trees are often left until they have flowered. Deadwood and anything dangerous can be dealt with at any time of year. We will tell you what suits your trees when we look at them.
Regular maintenance
Some trees and gardens are easiest kept on a schedule - once or twice a year - so nothing ever gets big enough to need heavy cutting. A number of our customers have us back every year for exactly that.
